Guest intro- Allan H.

I have struggled with painful heel fissures for most of my adult life. I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle, but I know a few things contribute to my deep cracked heels: I am slightly overweight, my job involves standing all day, and I love flip flops.

The big cracks in my heels are way beyond just calluses, so I reached out to Jan and asked her to do some more thoughts on products and treatments for extreme heel fissures.

Heel fissures

I have tried home remedies like homemade coconut sugar scrubs, olive oil and even the “Listerine foot soak.” But these just didn’t cut it.  My feet were so bad that they were way past the home remedy point.

I adjusted my diet with a few vitamin additions (I found the information HERE).

I have tried regular foot lotions, but they have never gotten rid of them completely.

I didn’t give up flip-flips, but I invested in a better quality pair, and I try to wear them less often.

Heel fissures

The things that worked best for me are a regular DIY Pedi, PurSources Urea 40% Foot Cream and wearing moisture socks every night. I have finally found a solution, but they haven’t healed over completely. And I have come to terms that they never will. But at least they are tiny, and they don’t hurt or bleed anymore.

The best creams for heel fissures

PurSources Urea 40% Foot Cream

This was my favourite cream.  I found it because I searched “foot creams and lotions” on Amazon.  It came up with a list of the top 100. From there I started reading reviews of all the products. This one had over 8000 reviews. 87% were over 4+ stars! With that many, I had to try it and it exceeded my expectations.  Although it felt kind of sticky (or tacky).

Pros:

•Great price

•Available in big pharmacies

•Smell ( light peppermint) – not too overwhelming

•Works great

Cons:

•Kind of sticky and leaves a residue ( but I usually wore socks over it so it didn’t bother me)

•Many of the reviews complained about the number of parabens. This doesn’t bother me though.

AmLactin Foot Repair Foot Cream

If found that this worked really good too, but not as good as the Pur source Urea. The only thing that really worried me was about the cautionary warning about sunburn.

Pros:

•It penetrates really well

•It’s Unscented

Cons:

•This product contains an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunburn

•Cannot find it easily in stores(Had to buy it on Amazon)

O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet Foot Cream

My grandmother swears by this cream and uses it for everything, so I figured I should try it.  I was actually pretty impressed.  I usually prefer a squeeze tube but the pot was fine. They also have over 25,000 reviews!!!

Pros:

•100% Money-Back Guarantee

•Works good

•It’s Unscented

Cons:

•Leaves a bit of a residue

Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair

I’ve tried this one a few times over the last decade.  It works pretty well but It took a couple of days to see the results. It is an ointment as well, so I always wore socks over top.

Pros:

•Work well

•Has a seal of approval by the American Podiatric Medical Association

• It’s Unscented

•Paraben-Free

Cons:

•It’s a pretty small tube (1 oz)

•Feels greasy

Other Heel Fissure lotions that work as well
Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Foot Cream

Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Foot Cream

Gold Bond has been around for years.  This cracked heel cream is typically in the top 5 of every list.  It’s dermatologist-tested & hypoallergenic. They boast 7 healing moisturizers plus Vitamins A, C, and E to condition and repair tough skin, leaving it soft and smooth. Plus it is clinically tested to moisturize for 24 hours. Gold Bond has over 1000 positive reviews I found it to work just fine but I wouldn’t put it in the top 2.  It feels more like a lotion and wasn’t sticky at all.

Vermont's Original Bag Balm for Dry Chapped Skin Conditions and heel fissuresVermont’s Original Bag Balm for Dry Chapped Skin Conditions

Bag Balm has a diehard online following.  It’s a great product that has simple ingredients.  It was originally used for cows but has been adopted into the human world.  You can use it on your lips, face, hands, cuticles, feet, elbows or knees. So it’s an all in one formula. Read this funny question on Amazon. I like this better than the Gold Bond lotion.  I felt that it penetrated better and stayed on longer.  But that maybe because it’s an ointment.

Eucerin Advanced Repair Foot Cream for dry cracked heelsEucerin Advanced Repair Foot Cream

Eucerin is a great, unscented, die free lotion.  It worked well at keeping my feet hydrated but I didn’t feel like it penetrated the heel cracks like one of the heel fissure products in the top 4 list.  This is the best review for Eucerine Advanced Repair Foot Cream and describes it perfectly.

I tried Miracle Heel Stick on my dry cracked heelsMiracle Heel Stick

You can find Soothing Shea and rich Cocoa butter, Tea Tree oil, and healing cold-pressed UltraAloe aloe vera gel in this heel stick. It comes as a convenient, no-mess stick applicator. I’ve seen this on all kinds of infomercials and Facebook ads.  I was hesitant to buy it, but it actually works pretty well.  It kept my feet fairly moisturized but it just wasn’t strong enough or have the right ingredients to close up my heel fissures.  It would be better for someone with mild calluses.

Footnanny - Mini Chocolate Foot Cream for cracked heels

Footnanny – Mini Chocolate Foot Cream

The Footnanny was one of Oprah’s top picks.  Probably because the Footnanny is her personal pedicurist.  The essential oil of chocolate is known to create a de-stressed mood, less anxious and more relaxed.  I wanted to try a “luxury footcare product” and I had high hopes for it but I didn’t find it any better than regular lotion.  It’s probably best for people with mild calluses.

Rapid crack repair for dry skin and heel fissuresRapid Crack Repair

This cream was developed and tested with dermatologists and podiatrists. It contains no fragrances, no irritants like parabens or phthalates and is packed with powerful plain oils. I liked this product and I worked well but it took a long time to see results. I would place it in the top 10 for sure.

As you can see I have tried a ton of lotions, creams and treatments for my heel fissures.  I hope you find this list handy.  I’ll keep adding to it as I try more. If you are looking for more information on heel fissures, check out our blog post Heel fissures.
